Fish Belly Blues/בלוז בבטן הדג

Published on January 5th, 2026

Dear friends and listening people,

It is that time of year. 2025 finally came to a close, and what a year it has been. So many wonderful and horrifying things have been happening to us all around the world – and while there have been incredibly difficult periods of time (and still are) – there have also been amazing things that happened through it.

This year, I premiered a new piece, “Yona”, in loving memory of Yona Karoussis who was murdered last year in a terrorist attack in Yafo, where I currently live. While I was working on the piece, I explored the story of Yona (Jonah) the profit, who allegedly had an  interesting experience at the belly of the fish who swallowed him. That led me to write “Fish Belly Blues” (בלוז בבטן הדג) which I also played this year in various ensembles.

I am attaching a version of it, from the Anat Fort “Forthree” with David Michaeli on bass and Shahar Haziza on drums, live at Studio Annette about a month ago. For me, this year and this entire period of time feels a bit like we are all in inside the fish’s belly. And what I can offer at this time to you is simply sharing the experience, knowing that it (like all other things) won’t last forever, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel (or belly, or government, or any other form of dark night).

May 2026 be better to us all, and may we all be better to it.

With Love,

Anat
